1956 Top Ten: (You’ve Got) The Magic Touch (#1)

Going back 70 years we land in 1956. I wasn’t born then. Records were around then, and we can always go back and listen to them! I’ve discovered endless great songs that were around before I was born, so don’t be afraid to investigate the “old stuff.” As I mentioned with that Beatles song, there are people whose parents weren’t even born when they were a band discovering their music. So, to no one’s surprise (if you’ve read my stuff regularly), here’s my favorite song from 1956. #1: (You’ve Got) The Magic Touch - The Platters You know how I love terrific vocals. The Platters delivered in every way imaginable. Pop, doo wop, R&B…they covered the bases. Last year, if you remember, my favorite 1955 song was “The Great Pretender,” which is one of the first songs I’d pack to take to a deserted island. This is a simple finding love song with vocals (and those marvelous backing vocals) that take it to another level. As with most of the Platters’ hits, it was written by their manager, Buck Ram.
