Top 10 comedies # 7 - Cheers

My favourite American sitcom of the 1980s has to be Cheers, the sitcom about the disparate bunch of drinkers in the Boston bar of the same name. The troops were led by Sam Malone ( Ted Danson), the handsome washed up Boston Red Socks pitcher - who fittingly served pitchers to washed up losers - living off his name to draw punters in. Cliff, Norm (George Wendt), and Frazier would bounce gags off the bar staff whilst ladies man Sam would try to conquer his haughty barmain Diane (Shelley Long) with every chat up line and tactic he had. Potty mouth barmaid Carla (Rhea Pearlman) was the exact opposite and had Sam wrapped around her finger. Woody Harrelson made his name here and Frasier Crane would get his own spin off series. The stunningly beautiful Kirsty Allen also appeared here. It had a few writers like most long running US sitcoms do but great jokes and comedic set ups. It had a innocence to, no bigotry and racism to deal with although no black characters to be fair. I grew up on this in my teens and loved Norms beer jokes. What guy wouldn't want to be Sam, a bit dim but the ladies loved him.

I've never really been able to get into American humour. I did see this a few times and enjoyed it. For a good few years we didn't have TV coverage so missed out on a lot of shows.
