As gas prices continue to go up some people are getting desperate and scammers are coming out to take advantage. Pump switching is what this scam is called. The scammer will target those who are more apt to need to help, like seniors for instance. They will offer to help them pump their gas. Then you drive off with a full tank thinking all is well. But when you look at the bill it far exceeds what it should normally be. They don't end the transaction and after you leave, they continue to use your form of payment to pump free gas for whatever they want or however much they want.
I'd pay cash from now on I think.

I pump my own gas
I wouldn't let anyone help me do that.
I don't think anyone would ask anyway as I don't look like I need help
