Tonight’s repast was fair enough though I should have known better than to order salmon. I skipped dessert but the lady folk ordered and waited and waited and waited for it to arrive. Eventually the principal lady politely reminded the waiter of her order. He apologised with appropriate profusion and offered us a complimentary Calvados, an apple brandy native to Normandy. The lady declined but sir said “Oh yes!” Sir was correct. He wasn’t served the ordinary splash of mediocre plonk reserved for ignorant tourists; he got the real McCoy, 15 years in the making and what a difference. It was smooth, mellow and far too drinkable. Out of my normal price range, but I could well be persuaded. I could have floated home on the fumes.
