Rise in fuel causes nationwide protest in Kanya

Eldoret, Kenya

On 18th May, 2026 public transport was entirely paralyzed when thousands of Kenyans flocked streets in protests over high prices of petroleum products. Diesel, the most used product had its price increased by almost 25%. As of commencement of the time of protests diesel was being sold at close to USD2 per litre which is the highest price in Africa. Even though the government is using the on-going conflict in the Middle East, Kenyan economists are faulting it say poor taxation procedures and high fuel levies are to blame. There are also rumours that the government of the day is taking advantage of the Middle East conflict to hike fuel prices and swindle money from Kenyans so as to use it in the forthcoming election’s campaigns! Unfortunately some 4 people died and a lot of property was destroyed.

Prices of petrol, diesel and gas cylinders have been hiked in India as well. This also causes price rise of grocery goods
