Finally Figured Out Where the Sound Was Coming From

...my right ear, apparently.
I had been concerned when my husband didn't hear the noise, even when we were standing in the same room. I had certainly considered the sound was internal, but I had never heard it anywhere outside the house. However, a few days ago when I went to bed, I heard the sound as clearly as usual, only my head was against the pillow, completely covering my ear.
Oh.
And then I *did* end up hearing the sound when I was outside the house. It was just a coincidence that I hadn't, because the sound isn't constantly happening, just now and then. I looked up what could be causing it, and it seems like it might just be excessive wax built up in my ear canal, which is a pretty common problem.
I will eventually need to go to an ear doctor and get cleaned out, I guess, but it's not affecting my hearing, so I'm not in a big hurry. It's not as annoying now that I know what it is, and at least there's nothing major going wrong with my house, lol!

@AliCanary Vince uses it quite a lot. I procrastinate a bit!
I think they do help and they're not very expensive.

I noticed when we first moved in together that my husband had an earwax cleaning kit. Do they work pretty well?

Tinnitus is a very common problem (both hubby and I have/had it) and can be caused by a myriad of things. In your case, I hope it's only ear wax. I've had tinnitus for as long as I can remember.

I actually had tinnitus in my left ear that made a very high-pitched sound, but I haven't been bothered by it for years. I have read that there's no way for the broken cilia to repair themselves, so maybe it's something that my brain has mercifully just tuned out.

@AliCanary Maybe so. Mine sounds like water rushing.

I hate that ear wax treatment...pouring drops of goop in your ear, then pouring water in to rinse it out.
Hope you get it treated and it resolves everything!

Yeah, I don't really like the thought of that at all. My mom used to have to give me eardrops, and I hated the sensation of liquid going into my ear. I don't swim underwater for that reason (I've tried earplugs - they hurt).
