Actions always speak louder than words but still, why did they behave like this?

So, i applied for the elementary school teacher's position yesterday. Though i'm a middle school teacher, to be exact, a Croatian language teacher i could still be taken into consideration and i worked as the elementary school teacher since the last year but only in the afternoon shift, where kids do homeworks, art and other activities. But i also worked in a class, a morning shift but barely a month so yes, i applied to do an active teaching and i first received a call from school that they have a few candidates but they'll soon get back to me. And they did, 5 minutes after that. They also said i could start working on Wednesday but they would like to meet me first and that would be today at 11 a.m. I said okay. It sounded too good but the end of the school year is near so, it didn't seem fishy. Well, i came at 11 a.m. sharp today but someone was there and i had to wait 20ish minutes. It felt weird cause, my meeting was at 11 a.m. but i thought okay. Then, right after shaking my hand, a pedagogue or an educator asked me what is my degree. I said Croatian language and i wondered why did she ask me that if she already knows that. In her office, she asked me again how come i don't work as a Croatian teacher, I laughed and said there is no work. I mean, i was thinking, i got the job, why this sneaking around and then she said to me that someone applied who has a degree being an elementary school teacher. I didn't see that coming and I wanted to say why did she call me then and i started saying that but she cut me off saying maybe there's still a chance. In the middle of that strange conversation where i thought the job was waiting for me, someone knocked and asked for her, she said she'll come later, then knocked again and i was the one who said she can go (I thought, i already waited for her almost 30 minutes, i can wait another 5). When she returned, she started talking about the class, finally but she told me again that another application was sent in and this person also has an elementary school tracher degree and she thinks i probably i wouldn't teach. I don't why i listened to her talking about the class or her telling me all that but when she asked me to come see the class which, according to her, i wouldn't teach, i said it's okay, there is no need. She apologized, thanked me on my fast reply and coming there. She even said she'll recommend me to another school or contact me concerning her school but my question is why couldn't she call me before, even if i was on my way and tell me honestly that there is someone more qualified than me and that i can come only if i want to? I mean, we had over 30C.degrees today and walking, plus travelling by bus in a heat, just so someone can meet me is not right. She was acting scheming and manipulative from the beginning and i only smiled and said i'm still glad i came but i wasn't and what was that wicked thing that i can meet the class which i'm not going to teach. Really... For someone who is advocating for sensitive groups like kids, she has no empathy for all the rest of humanity and she was a true hypocrite. I am glad i caught the bus, which was leaving in 3minutes and yeah, a horrible job interview experience. Simply malicious. P.s. they called me at 6.30 p.m., i didn't pick up cause it was unknown number. when finding out it was theirs, i sent the message and i got an answer that the old worker is coming back. Splendid. They put an ad on Monday and now the old teacher is returning. o, well.
