The "Can Opener" Strikes Again

United States

We have a low-lying overpass in downtown Louisville that trucks frequently get stuck under. It's affectionately nicknamed "the can opener." I don't know why truck drivers don't read the signs on the overpass telling them the clearance, but they don't. One of our major Interstates is closed for construction until who knows how long and people, including trucks, are having to take surface streets to navigate to where they are going. So on the first day of the interstate shut down, not one, not two, but three trucks got stuck in the overpass known as "the can opener." Hubby tells the story of when he was a police officer and a truck got stuck under an overpass they ended up having to let the air out of all 4 tires of the truck to make it low enough to tow out.

There is a bridge like that on YouTube where trucks are constantly getting stuck or "opened".

The “10’8”” site. They raised it eight inches (so now they call it 10’8”+8”) and trucks are still getting stuck. Like that place, the Can Opener has automated warning sensors that indicate when a semi is too tall. The sign lights up, lights flash, and it says “turn right.” Six truckers have ignored it this far this week.

Detours are very hard for trucks because of those kind of things

It's wild how they miss those height signs, isn't it? There's a similar bridge in North Carolina that's had a channel on YouTube for years. It was originally the same height as the Louisville bridge. They raised it another 8 inches, added a bunch of really obvious signage including one that senses overheight trucks and lights up telling the driver they're overheight and need to turn, and trucks somehow still hit it.

We have one of those here in the city also. But it is close to the downtown, and very close to Western University. It is often students, or their parents driving rental trucks, which they are not used to, that get stuck and damage the roof of the vehicle. And it always happens in late Aug/early Sept when students are flocking to the city to move in before classes begin or the end of the year which is in April. In our case the city cannot do a thing about it, other than increase the signage, which covers each side, because the overpass is actually owned by CN Rail.

As you say, they have warning signs! Maybe those drivers think they don't apply to them or something.

I was watching the weather blog a few minutes ago and Brian Goode said that’s the sixth one in just over two days. Plus there’s a jackknifed truck on the ramp from the Watterson to I-71 north. Glad I’m stuck at the VA for the day.

We have a local underpass that is honestly the same way. There are numerous signs, warnings, and the height of clearance is well posted. Yet it still keeps happening. And yes, the trick of letting the air out of the tires to be able to remove the vehicle has been done here, too.

triple trouble, that was a hassle being stuck.
