World Bicycle Day

These days, everyday is a reason to celebrate something, and usually, more than one something. Just look at all the “International X Day” this and “World X Day” that that we are reminded of on a daily basis. Some of these days are silly (“Tortilla Chip Day,” “Mario Day,”) others are more widely loved, like, say, “Coffee Day.” Today, June 3rd, is a day near and dear to my heart, World Bicycle Day. The United Nations declared June 3rd as World Bicycle Day in 2018, citing "the uniqueness, longevity and versatility of the bicycle, which has been in use for two centuries, and that it is a simple, affordable, reliable, clean and environmentally fit sustainable means of transport.” A bike is much more than that, though. Studies over the years have stressed the physical and mental health benefits of riding a bicycle on a consistent basis, and World Bicycle Day is now being used as a way to promote a healthy lifestyle among the diabetic community. I use it for all of that, and while the low-impact nature of cycling does wonders for my physical health, the mental health benefits when I ride are off the charts. Since the day I learned to ride as a child, the bike has represented freedom for me. While I’m riding, I’m not worried about my financial situation, home situation, the world, etc. For a couple hours, it’s just me, a bike, and the miles. And everything seems better at the end of that ride. So do yourself a favor and rediscover that childhood joy. World Bike Day is a good day to start! “My bike is my gym, my wheelchair and my church all in one.” - Bill Walton

I can't bike anymore because I can't see where I'm going, but I still love the concept.

I am completely blind, but once every few years I will tandem bike with someone; I don't feel the thrill of it like I used to, so I got bored with it, but maybe it's been long enough that I will enjoy it again.

@mininifty - We have a blind girl that rides with us, with a volunteer on a tandem. Our weekly ride is in a couple hours, not sure if she's coming today or not. Her volunteer is, so who knows? She enjoys the hell out of it!

My feed has been full of bicycles items today. I didn't get out on the beast today, chores to catch up with. The other thing that fills up my feed is cats!

@Ronrybs - I rode to the grocery store today, but I threw a 20-mile loop into it for the mileage.

I can totally hear the great Bill Walton giving that quote. It’s definitely a great way to stay in shape. I loved riding at my grandparents. They lived in a neighborhood that was secluded, and the roads were perfect for riding. No one worried about getting hit by a car or anything. What great memories!

He was an avid cyclist. I live in the middle of Denver. Takes me a couple of sometimes hectic miles to get to the bike paths.

I haven't been on a bike in a few years, it was probably the year World Bicycle Day was declared that I last did it, but maybe it's worth another try.

I didn't ride bikes but I had a horse and I would leave the world behind when I rode so I know where you're coming from.

@teamfreak16 Mountain bikes narrowed the gap a bit though.
