The 9-day 2026 Women’s Giro d’ Italia (Tour of Italy) is finished, won this year by Dutch rider Demi Vollering, who, with this win, became only the 2nd woman to win all three Grand Tours (Giro, Tour de France Femmes, and La Vuelta a’ Espania Feminina [Tour of Spain.]) Vollering (Team: FDJ United-Suez) started the final day 49 seconds behind leader Anna Van der Breggen (Netherlands, Team SD Worx-Protime,) but attacked and dropped her rival on the final climb, to finish 4th on the stage. She finished the 9 days 30 seconds ahead of 2nd-place Antonia Niedermaier (Germany, Canyon//SRAM,) and 1:37 in front of Van der Breggen. Vollering also won the Queen of the Mountains (Best Climber) jersey contest, while Elisa Balsamo (Italy, Lidl-Trek) won the Points (most consistent sprinter) jersey, and Canada’s Isabella Holmgren (Lidl-Trek) won the Best Young Rider (under 26 yrs.) competition. Lidl-Trek won the Best Team competition (based upon the time of each team’s top 3-placed riders each day.) It was a fun 9 days, full of exciting sprint finishes, and some great climbing stages. Stage 8 even had a gravel climb summit finish that was shortened by a few kilometers due to ice falls at the finish line. Lots and lots of women’s racing to come, but the next big race on the schedule is the Tour de France Femmes Avec Zwift. The ladies always put on an entertaining show, so it should be a good one! Link is a highlight package from Stage 9.

Interesting that young riders are under 26! How old do you think the best of the cyclists are?

Well, Tadej Pogacar is 27. He's the best in the world right now. He had a stranglehold on that contest for years.

Yikes, that icy gravel summit climb sounds precarious!

I didn't see it on the highlight package I watched, but apparently a bunch had fallen, they cleared it, but there was a danger of another, so they shortened the race. Too bad, I love gravel!

That’s great. It’s also extremely sad. I didn’t know until your discussion that there were even “major” races for women. They never get the attention that the Tour de France does (or the one for men, I should say).
