Yeah, when this song doesn’t make the top ten you know that top ten is LOADED. I’m continuing the monthlong celebration of Paul McCartney’s 84th birthday. This wasn’t released as a single when it first came out in 1970 (the single released at that time was “Another Day,” which was not on the album); however, it got a lot of FM rock airplay. So here it is! Maybe I’m Amazed (Paul) Now, they did release this as a single from the Wings Over America album; however, to this day, 50 years later, if you hear this song on the radio you’re most likely to hear the 1970 studio version. I don’t know if we can fully understand how traumatic the Beatles’ breakup was on Paul. Everything was pulled out from under him (and we can argue until the cows come home whether it was him or John and Yoko responsible for the dissolution of the Beatles, but it doesn’t matter). There was no guarantee that he’d be successful as a solo artist (as you can see the by the comparative lackluster solo success of the other three). Plus, he was facing all of this with a family. Oh, it’s cool to be the rock and roll playboy, but in 1970 he had a wife and baby. Yeah, it might not have been a crossroads that we poor people face, where the wrong step might leave you destitute, but still… So Paul put it to music, combining his love and his uncertainty into his first classic post-Beatles tune. Maybe I’m Amazed Written by Paul McCartney From McCartney (Paul), 1970 I’m a lonely man who’s in the middle of something:

Personally, I preferred the live version, but I do like the song either way.

Yeah, I remember this one. Of course by 1970 I'd gotten over my crush and had gone on to the 'hard' rock bands that I liked better.
