Tomorrow it’s Sir Paul McCartney’s birthday! I’m celebrating all month with a countdown of my favorite songs across his career that’s now over 65 years strong! The countdown’s been all over the place, and we’re in the 80s for today’s song.
Pipes of Peace (Paul)
You probably don’t remember this song because everybody was too busy playing the “other” single from this album: the duet with Michael Jackson, “Say, Say, Say.”
This is a great song, and it had a marvelous video. This is one of those cases where a video augments a song perfectly. The video is based on the Christmas Day Truce in 1914 during World War I, when British and German troops crawled out of their foxholes and met to celebrate Christmas Day.
It’s funny to read 40-year-old reviews then read more contemporary takes on albums. “Back then” it was blasted (as were most of McCartney’s album by the “music critic elite”). Now, many critics see it for the good album it is.
And this song is better than “Say, Say, Say.” It just didn’t have Michael Jackson on it.

I remember it. I thought "Say, Say, Say" was cheesy at best, even at the time.(Although I might listen to it over, say, "The Girl is Mine.")
