Tour de France season is near, just a couple of weeks before the men start (they’ll race a total of 21 days in July,) and I’ve been highlighting some of the American stars currently racing in the men’s peloton. Today, we remain within the mighty Visma-Lease a Bike team. Yesterday, I wrote about their superb American climber, Sepp Kuss. But Visma has another strong American climber within their ranks.
Born in Walnut Creek, California (1999,) Matteo Jorgenson grew up in Boise, Idaho (nickname: The Boise Bird,) taking part in that town’s BYRDS (Boise Young Rider Development Squad) cycling program.
BYRDS certainly paid off. While Matteo mainly serves as a domestique, working for team leader Jonas Vingegaard, he is, occasionally, the Visma team leader himself. As a result, Jorgenson is a two-time (consecutive) winner of the 8-day stage race, Paris-Nice (2024/2025.) He also won the 2023 Tour of Oman (4 days,) where he also won the overall Points classification (Best Sprinter, but not always won by a pure sprinter,) as well as the Best Young Rider (under 26 yrs) classification.
And while you’ll mainly see Jorgenson protecting and pacing Jonas this July, there will be days when he’s free to go, and on those days, Matteo is quite a fun watch!
Link is a short of Matteo winning his 2nd-consecutive Paris-Nice:

Yes! The Tourmalet is a legendary climb. As highly regarded as Alpe d' Huez or the Hautacam. A couple years ago they had to climb the Tourmalet in both directions in the same day. Brutal.

@teamfreak16 There was a couple who turned up. He had two small children behind him and five minutes later the wife turned up with the 'luggage' - tents, clothing, etc. You can see the tea-towels are hanging out behind the last child. lol
