Into the top ten we go in this monthlong celebration of Sir Paul McCartney’s 84th birthday. I’ve had a great time with this countdown, and it’s helped inspire next month’s list. No, not another list of Beatles songs for Ringo’s birthday.
Anyway, let’s get the top ten songs that mention the Beatles in some form kicked off…with a Linda? NO!!!!! warning.
#10: Are the Good Times Really Over (I Wish a Buck Was Still Silver) - Merle Haggard
If you think about it, this song is hilarious. If you know your country music history (and if you don’t, relax, I’ll tell you
), you may remember that, in 1970, Merle Haggard had a big hit with “The Fightin’ Side of Me.” The opening of that song is, “I hear people talkin’ bad about the way we have to live here in this country, harpin’ on the wars we fight, gripin’ ‘bout the way things ought to be.” Fast forward twelve years, and here’s Hag, SINGING A SONG that talks bad about the way we have to live here in this country, harping on the war we fought, and griping about the way things ought to be.
In other words, the guy who warned people about “runnin’ down our country, hoss” turned around and ran our country down!!!
The only truly sad thing about this is the reference to when “Nixon lied to us all on TV.” Every politician does that now and we don’t bat an eye.

I don't like the song, it's way too country for my taste but I wanna argue with MH, before Vietnam was Korea and before Korea was WWII so tell me when were ther good times? Ok, maybe there were good times for people who weren't part of a military family but it sure as hell wasn't for us military families

@rebelann -- oh, that's a great Billy Joel song. I know he's probably not up your alley, but still.
Here it is.

Billy Joel said it perfectly in “Keeping the Faith”: “the ‘good ol’ days’ weren’t always good, and tomorrow’s not as bad as it seems.”

Merle Haggard could get away with that because he was Merle Haggard.

And this probably appealed to the people who think “Born in the USA” was a “patriotic song.”

Glad you enjoyed it! Old country music is my primary love, believe it or not.
