Something you don’t see every day

As I was walking over to my friend’s house I saw an unusual sight – a woman taking her tortoise for a walk. I paused on my way past and said ‘That’s something you don’t see every day!’ and she replied ‘Makes you think you must have been on the wine doesn’t it?’ I guess she gets comments a lot. The tortoise was surprisingly fast as well. It trotted across the road and I was lucky to get a photo before it was too late! All rights reserved. © Text copyright Fleur 2026.

That is for sure unusual. My neighbors in Switzerland had two tortoises, they could run faster than I thought.

Our next-door neighbour in our last house used to have all kinds of reptiles, he had a special licence to breed rare species. He also had a large group of tortoises that lived in a greenhouse in the garden. In warm weather he would open the doors and they would roam outside. They were surprisingly fast!

@LadyDuck We all tend to think of reptiles as slow moving, but they are definitely not if warm enough!

Glad you were able to take a photo. I was expecting a bigger tortoise lol! But they do grow big fast. I had wanted one but I just didn't want it on a whim without knowing how to take care of them coz I don't want them dying or be unhappy under my care. Until that day comes that I become an almost expert in caring for a tortoise, I won't have one.

I wonder how often she takes it out? I didn't ask.

@fleura I might muttered something like “mad old bat” in passing. In France last month we saw quite a few people with either dogs or cats in prams - or just very odd looking babies. The pram pushers looked quite normal and sane but clearly weren’t.

I guess they need the chance to exercise too. She’s just a responsible pet owner for letting her tortoise freely instead of keeping it caged all the time.

That is unusual to see. We had a large sized tortoise wander rinto our yard and found his way into our koi pond one summer's day. He was an excellent swimmer, and when my husband stacked some rocks to aid him in exiting our pond, we were surprised at how quickly he was out of that pond, across our yard and heading back in the direction in which he came.

Just now
She should get some wheels under the tortoise and then he can motor along!
