I Was There - The Mission

Once again, I seem to be pulling an all-nighter, which means, as I often do, watching You Tube videos of shows I’ve actually attended. They aren’t all on there, but you’d be surprised at just how much is there. In this case, the video is from September 2023, when I saw my favorite band, The Mission (known as The Mission U.K. here in the States.) They headlined a tour that also featured Chameleons (known as Chameleons U.K. here in the States,) and Theatre of Hate, at The Oriental Theater (known as “The O” here in Denver.) The Mission formed in Leeds, England, in 1986, after guitarist/vocalist Wayne Hussey and bassist Craig Adams left goth band The Sisters of Mercy. While primarily known as a top-tier goth band, I’ve always described The Mission as an arena rock band trapped inside a goth band’s body. They are best known for hits such as “Tower of Strength,” “Wasteland,” and “Deliverance” (which is a song based on the book “The Mists of Avalon” by Marion Zimmer Bradley.) Despite its now-outdated name, The Oriental Theater is a designated landmark. The name and marquee remain the same by requirement (and is the reason owners and concert-goers call it “The O.”) It’s a fine live music venue that also books burlesque and comedy shows (and the occasional indie film, even.)
