It’s around this time of year that schools hold their Sports Days…..
There are several thoughts on this ……
Children should strive to be the best they can …..
Losing makes a child try harder in the future ….
It’s the taking part that is important ….not winning…..
Everyone should get medals , not just the winners…….
Children won’t bother trying if everyone gets a medal anyway …..
Children should be able to opt out of Sports Days if they don’t want to take part ……
I would be interested to know what you think ……based on your experience as a child taking part or parents watching …..
Or
If no experience of these days , just your thoughts ….are Sports Dys a good idea ….why ?
A bad idea …..why ?
Please let me know ….

@traceyjayne I was the most unsporty boy in the school and sports day was my worst nightmare. I just kept asking “Why?”. Never understood sports. What was the point of the long jump? So what if somebody could run faster than someone else? I was always picked last for teams. On the cricket pitch I was always told to go and stand as far as possible from the action. What action is there in cricket anyway? If the ball ever came near me I would move away in case it hit me instead of catching it. And on sports day everyone was looking at me.

I think these days the best reason for sports is just exercise. Kids just don’t get enough of it. I didn’t like playing sports, but I was tall, and when I first played basketball, I didn’t mind. Then, I got so self conscious about how I looked running, and I had a fear of letting my team down. In the end, I think it was good for me. We can’t always get out of doing unpleasant things.

I don't think everyone should get medals for starters. Whether it's sport or in the classroom, there will always be kids who excel and those who don't. We all need to learn to deal with disappointments. I hated sport and was no good at it. Sometimes I could persuade Mum to let me skip the big Sports Days.
