I pulled an all-nighter again last night, so what else does one do but go on a 24-mile bike ride in the morning? That’s what I did. I rode past a couple of golf courses during the ride, which brings me to today’s Song About Sports - “Fairway to Heaven” by Gaye Bykers on Acid. Gaye Bykers on Acid formed in Leicester, England, in 1984, emerging from the short-lived grebo scene in England (grebo bands combined electronics, punk, folk, hip hop, and lots of soundbites, into wildly-entertaining indie rock.) Like the Ramones, each band member adopted the last name “Byker.” They were also known for occasionally performing, in women’s dresses, as Lesbian Dopeheads on Mopeds. (Not a serious bunch, the Bykers.) “Fairway to Heaven” is from the Bykers’ 1989 album, Stewed to the Gills, and if the title didn’t give it away, the song is about golf. Playing golf, from the point of view of a duffer with a high handicap (“I need an eagle, not a birdie.”) I saw them play this live at the 1989 Reading Festival in England. It’s just as much fun on record as it was in concert. FORE! Link is to the song:

What I always really enjoyed was horse racing when I lived in NYC. One of the most beautiful songs I think are Run for the Roses by Dan Fogelberg.

It's not a video, it's just the song. It's not for everybody.

It's safe to say I had not heard this before. Have you heard the Gilligan's Island of Stairway?

They weren't exactly a mainstream band. I have not heard it, I'll have to go check it out.
