I was there on Independence Day. Where were you?

I remember well the night when the British flag was lowered for the last time and independence was achieved. The tarnished British crown was represented by Prince Phillip, and the flag was folded and handed to him to take back home. It was a wild night with fireworks and a lot of craziness in the stadium but wasn’t allowed to be there. It was too late at night for a six year old to be walking with the crowd across town, but I remember the buzz in the air. That was 62 years ago, sixth of July 1964, and from then on Nyasaland was to be called Malawi and I was in a whole new country without going anywhere.

What an incredible memory to have. Even at six years old, it must have been exciting to feel the atmosphere of such a historic moment

I was nine months old at that time, so I'm sure I was at home with my mom and family when that happened.
