Lost in translation

Last time I was in Wales I went to a well-known budget supermarket to pick up a few things for dinner. But even though they are known to have low prices I was a bit surprised to see the sign shown on the right, which says ‘Meat for nothing’ – in other words ‘Free meat’. Then I walked around to the other side of the sign and saw the English version; ‘Meat free’ - in other words, vegetarian. I think they need a better translator. I wonder if they would honour the wording? All rights reserved. © Text and image copyright Fleur 2026.

Not everything that can be translated shares the same meaning, and not in this case-too bad though.

That’s pretty funny. Reading your post my first thought was, what’s wrong with the meat that made them give it away? The real explanation is hilarious.

It did make me laugh. I was very tempted to try to argue that I should have some free meat. And I need to find out if these signs are still there and if so whether they have been issued across the whole country; if so someone really needs to tell them!

I certainly need a better translator. I had instructions on the back of a crochet book telling me to wash the lace tenderly. lol
