You know you live in a good neighborhood when…

Still no electricity. Now they are saying Wednesday (tomorrow) morning. I am so thankful I have a place to go with air conditioning. Can you imagine how badly the rest of my neighbors are suffering? Some of them don’t even have cars so they can’t even go to a cooling station. The retired lady across from me can’t even go to her grandchildren’s because their electricity is out too. Anyway, last night everyone had gone to bed, and I was watching television. Now, I always check my deadbolt lock before I go to bed at my house. Out of habit, I went and checked my dad’s front door. Unlocked. On a hunch, I checked their garage door. Unlocked. I locked both of them, and went to bed. I don’t care where you live; you’ve got to lock your doors! My paternal grandmother lived in the country, and when my sister and I would stay with her, I’d get up after she went to bed and lock her doors. I was like eight years old, but I wasn’t taking any chances!

I am a fanatic about locking our door, garage door, hotel room doors, etc. immediately upon entering the dwelling. I don't think the electrical issue singled out your neighborhood intentionally. If there are outages all across the city, they have to fix hospitals and government offices first. One time in the Summer (of course) of 1998 I think we lost electricity for a week after a major storm. We just had to wait until they got to our neighborhood because it was a large storm that affected the whole city.

Oh, I don’t think they did either. It just feels like we are because we are always the last ones waiting. I’m sure they are just following the same pattern they always do and we happen to be last.

I am not particular about locking my door during the day, but I have to because of Nico, He will try to pick the door open otherwise. At night I insist. I have forgotten a few times, and have gotten upset with myself.

I let people in my house for maintenance work (electrician, plumber, etc), and lock the door behind them. I remember my grandparents living way out in the country and never locking their doors. Living in the city I never had that “luxury,” but that also means it’s a habit I never had to break.

We never used to lock the door from the garage to the house, but in the last 6 or 8 years living in the country, we would lock the other doors. Today we lock all of our doors, day or night, they are locked. The world has changed so much, and not for the better.

I would feel unsafe If the doors are not locked. When we were living in the countryside of the west of Ireland. I noticed that our neighbours didn’t lock their doors. My husband adopted that habit but I didn’t. I told him to always lock the door especially when we were sleeping.
