Hey hey! It’s time for another song from the jukebox! For today’s song, we’re going Down Under for someone that most of you have never heard of…unless you remember my musical aviation disaster countdown. Yes, for the second day in a row I’m featuring someone who was on that list. That means I have to give a massive shoutout to our Aussie buddy @JudyEv , who suggested that countdown. By extension, that introduced me to this band and this song! Thanks, Judy.
Jukebox in Siberia - Skyhooks
Australia came late to the rock and roll party, but when they did arrive, it was full-tilt boogie. Skyhooks would have been just another glam rock band anywhere else in the world; however, in Australia, they were “outrageous” and “controversial.”
They also were quite good, as I’ve learned since being introduced to them for that aviation countdown (“classic line-up” lead singer Graeme “Shirley” Strachan [“I’m not a poof” he said of his nickname, and that was before the movie Airplane! made surely/Shirley a pop culture remark] was killed in a helicopter accident in 2001). This was their final hit in Australia, and the only one that went to #1. It’s a humorous take on what happens when perestroika takes hold in the Soviet Union.
I’m really sorry this band didn’t gain success beyond their native land. I’ve greatly enjoyed discovering their music. I hope you do, too.

I see what you did there. Beatles tie-in. The way that started I thought it was headed off in some 80's college radio throwback direction. That was pretty awesome!
