Mother in Law is Really Struggling With Reality

You’ll remember that my mother in law accused my husband of stealing her earrings
Sister and brother in law found them in her bathroom drawer where she’d put them before taking a shower
But mother in law finds their finding of the earrings suspicious. So she has invented the story that my husband reported the theft to the staff and somebody felt guilty and snuck the earrings back into her drawer
Apparently she had a meltdown with hubby’s brother yesterday crying and saying she hates where she lives and that nothing’s wrong with her. She’s never done that with the brother before, just us.
It’s sad to watch her deteriorate

I hate that, for everyone. You said that they were scheduling her with a memory specialist, or a psychologist. Has anything been done yet?

They explained that counseling involves cognitive behavioral therapy and she’s cognitively impaired so she wouldn’t be capable of learning and applying coping mechanisms. They said she’s behaving normally for her status

I can’t imagine what it’s like to be inside her head. It has to be confusing, frustrating and scary

Oh, my. So first she accused your husband of taking them, then the brother found them, and now suddenly your husband didn't take them but reported the ''theft''...One of my friends is a nurse in a memory care unit...they do not allow any of their residents to have jewelry unless it's a wedding ring. The reason of course is for the same thing you are going through with your MIL. They hide them or lose them and then it's completely gone from their memory. It's sad.
I hope the brother doesn't let her out of there. No way can she live by herself.

We might have to take away her jewelry. But then she’ll say her shoes or pajamas or something we’re stolen. It’s a no win situation

Just now
@LooeyVille
It does seem that her symptoms are escalating. Yes, there would be something else for her to decide was stolen. Her mind just isn't working right...this is the meanest disease.

Aye
And I daresay it will get worse
She believes what she is saying to be true
I don't think it's like she invents anything lol
She could well have moments of clarity and maybe really does hate where she lives as during those moments of clarity she will no doubt have flashbacks of how it used to be
Been through this , it's not good and never ends well

Yeah it’s got to be hard for her. I dare say that when she gets a little worse it’ll actually be better because she won’t have the lucidity to understand that something is wrong with her
