Wouldn't You Have Figured Out To Not Jump In The Water After the Second or Third Person was Drowning?

Not to make light of a tragedy, but I just don't understand this story from Ohio.
A group of people, including children, were hanging out next to a river in Ohio. The river was running high and fast that day, with the water flowing at a rate of 350 cubic feet per second. Apparently that's twice as fast than it should have been running.
For whatever reason, one person decided to jump into the river to have a swim. The friends and family on the shore saw him struggling. So a second person jumped in to help the first person. Person #2 started struggling, so person #3 jumped into help #1 and #2. You can see where I'm going with this.
Clearly the water was too fast and whether or not you were a good swimmer, you weren't able to handle it.
The group didn't have anything to throw into the water to the 3 who were drowning, like a life preserver or anything.
So a 4th person jumped in. And a 5th.
Sadly, all 5 people drowned.
A child ran down to the highway to flag down help and have someone call 911. Two children are now without parents and have been placed with Family Services.
It's a very tragic situation, but I still don't understand what the last two or three people were thinking they could do differently than the first two or three.

Those who jumped only thought of one thing and that's trying to save another life.

@looeyville People panic. The first person who went in for a swim was an idiot. First rule of lifesaving is that you don’t go into the water to help someone unless to have to. I was a qualified pool and beach lifeguard and what I see at the sea and in pools is shocking sometimes.
