My son and his friends

Tonight, my son told me his friend was having a rough time, and he was trying to calm him down and make him feel better. I'm reminded once again why he is so amazing. He knows what it's like to be going through something hard, and he does everything in his power to be a good friend. I also love that his friends do the same in return. My son is an amazing friend, but he also has amazing friends.
There's an age-old adage that you are who you hang out with. You are often defined by your friends. If you are a good person, you want to hang out with other good people. My son has taken this definition and run with it.
My son will never be popular because he isn't into the things a lot of popular kids are into, but he still has a lot of friends. He exudes kindness and empathy, and some kids really need that. My son has it in spades.
I told my son to let us know if there was anything we could do to help, like finding a way for them to hang out. His friend's mom doesn't seem to let him do much. I know he has a lot of home life issues. My son is always there for him when he can be. I know his friend has a lot of family issues. Our life is far from easy, but his friend has moved back and forth from school to school and has never really been able to stay in one place. The adults in his life seem to throw him around, and there are times my son will go months without hearing from him, and then one day he'll reappear and he'll be back at my son's school. They became friends in middle school and formed a close bond, but then his friend would move out and then move back. His mom would take his phone, and he wouldn't be able to call my son, who is one of his very few friends. I just feel for the kid.
My son has another friend who has a much more privileged life than the one we live, but who doesn't have a lot of friends because of his behavior. He's a genuinely sweet kid, but he's impulsive and does things that make kids not like him. My son overlooks everything else and just sees a kid who is kind, but struggles sometimes. My son is one of his only friends, and my son's other friends don't care for him, but tolerate him for my son's sake. The kid has since started being homeschooled, and my son still has occasional contact with him. When my son was sick on Halloween, his friend came over with a bag of candy for him.
My son always chooses his friends based on their kindness. My son's friends are all a bit odd, but they're all kids who will go places eventually because they're smart and kind. I really hope that my son stays friends with these kids long after high school ends. I want nothing but the very best for them all.

Thanks, I really hope things get better for them. We are in the thick of it too, so I understand what it's like to be having a hard time. Most people struggle at one point in time or another. There is always going to be someone better off than you and someone worse off than you, but at the end of the day, what matters is how everyone treats each other, especially when they're going through difficult times. I love that my son has taken the things he has learned through his own struggles and uses them to help others. It doesn't matter where you are in life so long as you continue to treat those around you with kindness and respect. It's easy to let how difficult your life is take over, but when you put your difficulties aside for a moment to help someone else, that shows your true character.

It sounds like your son's friend has quite a rough life. Having a friend like your son must be a very treasured thing in his life. That is so heart warming.
