Howdy! Although it’s never my intention to make anyone angry, I know today’s song — more precisely, my choice of the version to use — is going to incur the wrath of someone on the Jersey Shore. Sorry, NJ Chic, this was the first version I heard, so it’s the one I’m going with. Here’s today’s song from the jukebox. #7: Stars on the Water - Rodney Crowell And why would NJ Chic be mad? Jimmy Buffett recorded this in 1983. And here I am, using someone else’s version! As Buford T. Justice said, “That is nothing but plain old-fashioned communism.” I’m sure you George Strait fans feel the same way, because he also covered this. When I get on the Gulf coast, there are a few songs that get A LOT of repeated plays in the car. This is one of them. And yes, I play Buffett’s version, too. (Another song that Buffett covered, “Biloxi” by Jesse Winchester, also gets a lot of digital spins.) I got to meet Rodney Crowell in 1988, and I have his autograph on the cover of this album. I met Buffett, too, but he didn’t autograph my Rodney Crowell album. When Buffett did this on Austin City Limits in 1983 he said that it was one of those songs that he heard and said, “I wish I’d written that!” The important thing is that it did get written, so we can all enjoy it.
