There's a case in New York State (not New York City) where a couple were having an argument and they were intoxicated. They have 5 children all under age 17 living at home with them. The couple was upstairs and for some unknown reason during their drunken argument the husband poured gasoline on the floor. The wife took a lighter and ignited the gasoline. A fire started. The wife said she didn't know gasoline would burn. Yeah, right. But that's not the biggest problem. They didn't evacuate their 5 children from the burning house. It's not clear if they started putting the fire out themselves or exited the house leaving the children inside. But by the time the fire department got there, the fire had been extinguished. It's not clear who called the fire department. So they've been charged with reckless endangerment, endangering the welfare of a child, conspiracy, and arson. Do you want to know what the wife has said in her defense? "It's not an arson if nothing burned down."
