We had 3 hens go broody on us one after the other and the first egg hatched this past Saturday--of course, on the day we were leaving town for Nolan's christening!
This little chick that I found Saturday morning survived and is 4 days old today. He/she is getting around well and toddles all over the chicken coop. Mamma hen keeps a close watch and protects her baby very well.
This hen was in nest box #1. Another hen, who I call hen #4 started rooming with hen #1 before the eggs started hatching. So far only one other egg has hatched and that chick didn't make it. I am leaving the remaining eggs for a few more days in hopes that a couple more will hatch.
Hen #2 is sitting well and helps out with Hen #1's little one. It's so cute to see all this co-parenting going on! Hen #3 is dead serious about her job and I usually don't see her out of the next box at all during the day.
It is strange how these hens all picked next boxes next to each other. There are three more on top of the ones they chose and two other ones higher up in there.
I will keep you all posted on the status of eggs hatching. Hoping for a few more baby chicks! In the meantime, enjoy the photo above of the little one! I will call her Dot or Dotty for the white spot on top of her head. Do you have another name I should consider for the new baby chick?

Stay with Dotty. Maybe name your chick Shadow due to the dark coat.
