The International Day of Friendship

Today, July 30, is the International Day of Friendship.
In 2011 the United Nations declared every July 30 as the International Day of Friendship; the idea being that people of different cultures, people, countries, and individuals can inspire peace efforts and bring communities together.
We recently saw this in action during the World Cup in football (soccer here in the States,) which was held in The United States, Canada, and Mexico. We saw people from wildly different cultures arrive en masse. Everybody was getting along, partying together, despite being fans of different teams, despite being from incredibly different places. Everyone had a good time together, even those not interested in the Cup.
It was proof that yes, people can and do get along just fine, as long as you leave our leaders out of the equation. It was an amazing thing to see and read about - folks from all over the world just having fun together, and it’s an idea that can work, from country level on down to the local level, down to individual communities, down to neighbors.
We’re all human beings. We’re all different.
Can’t we just be nice to each other? We just saw it work. And it was wildly successful. Let’s keep that vibe going. If those enemy hockey mascots can be friends off the ice, we can too.

Now if more people would just admit that it was okay for people to be friends even if there are glaringly obvious differences.
But I love all these "goofy" holidays.

There's one or more everyday. Back when I was drinking, I used to read a magazine called The Modern Drunkard. They once published an article giving you a reason to drink for every day of the year. Some were "holidays" like this. Some were stuff like "Sanford and Son debuted on this day."

@thislittlepennyearns - I used to love Tuaca. That stuff is the bomb! My ex and I would just hang out on Friday nights doing shots and listening to CD's.

@teamfreak16 That sounds like a fantastic magazine.
And you no longer drink? I know a lot of as you put it geezers that put the bottle down for the green stuff. Can't say I blame them.

True. We can all be friends, we just have to leave our leaders out of it.
Conflict starts with greediness.
We can set aside our differences and just party together! Sports do that.

I like meeting people from different cultures and places. I met a lot of different people when I was in the army, both inside the army and out on the economy (what we called the city we were stationed in.)
