I Was There - Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds

Up all night, so what do I do? Look all over You Tube for videos of concerts I’ve attended. And I found one. This one is from all the way back in 1989, even. It was on the Werchter day of the Torhout Werchter Festival (the bands play day one in Torhout, day two in Werchter) in Belgium. This particular set, performed by Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, was in the middle of the lineup. He and his merry band did not disappoint. Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds formed in Melbourne, Australia in 1983, and are still going strong. Lumped in with genres such as goth, art rock, post punk, and experimental, Cave just prefers to call it “Sad b*stard music.” They have released 18 studio albums, and have won numerous Australian music awards. Their single with Australian pop singer Kylie Minogue, “Where the Wild Roses Grow,” reached Top 10 in 14 countries (although no chart success in the States.) At Rock Werchter 89, Cave and the Bad Seeds put on an energetic set for a rather large crowd, many of whom we spoke to also attended the Torhout shows the day before. We took a USO tour from our duty station in Germany to the festival, so we got a good discount, but the day would have been worth it at full price. And I got to see Nick Cave.
