Where Did Our Love Go? - "The Bed's Too Big Without You"

Where Did Our Love Go? The title alone should give this series away - breakup songs, so to speak, but not the sappy stuff you hear on your local iHeart Radio abomination. And this one is definitely not sappy: “The Bed’s Too Big Without You” by The Police. Obviously, after a breakup, one tries to cope as best they can. And sleeping alone again can be a big adjustment. Sting is not adjusting well. He’s lonely, he can’t stand sleeping by himself, he’s wondering where it went wrong (“All I made was one mistake.”) He made love to his pillow (seriously, that’s a lyric!) The Police, early on, were known as a new wave band that added ska and reggae elements to their sound. “The Bed’s Too Big Without You,” a single from their 1979 album (single released in 1980,) Regatta de Blanc, is straight-up reggae. Heck, even though Sting obviously sounds like Sting, I think I can detect a small hint of a rastafarian accent at times. I’m often too busy listening to the music, so I might be wrong on that one. Final verdict - Sting needed to get a smaller bed. Maybe a twin. Link is to the studio album version:

Despite his earlier missteps (also thinking of "Every Breath You Take"), Sting and Trudie Styler seem to have made a lifelong match. I am quite a huge Police fan, have all their albums and the CD boxed set. Even dated a dude who looked like Stewart Copeland, lol.

@teamfreak16 I love his solo work, too! My sister and I took a six-hour road trip and all we listened to the entire trip was a cassette of The Soul Cages that we just let endlessly loop while we drove and talked.

That's true, he and Trudie have been together a long, long time. He did write some pretty dark tunes when he was with the band. I don't think a lot of radio listeners got that part.

It was released as a single, but I don't remember ever hearing it on the radio, at least not where I was living at the time. I've just usually always had a physical copy of the album in some format or other. That's why I know it.

@teamfreak16 This is a great album. Since you know the deep cuts, I also really like "J'aurais Toujours Faim de Toi" from this one.

@AliCanary - I'd say it's my favorite album by them. Although yesterday I did listen to my copy of Zenyatta Mondatta.

Or stop stalking his exes (“Every Breath You Take”). Great song. Lots of good breakup songs from them. I always loved that line in “Can’t Stand Losing You”: “I’m too full to swallow my pride.”

@teamfreak16 — like Buford T. Justice said, that is nothing but pure old-fashioned communism!

She scratched up his records. What's he supposed to do?

Vince rarely picks up on the lyrics as he's too busy listening to the music. We used to play in brass bands and if he hears a march, he often sings the bass line. lol

It often takes me quite a while before I get around to really listening to the lyrics. I also listen more to the music.

Break up songs are sad songs. I'm definitely listening to this one

This one has such a reggae groove that it almost seems darker than sad.
