One less song in this breakup songs series, “One Less Bell to Answer.” That’s today’s song. A sad little ballad from The 5th Dimension. That’s multiple Grammy-winners, The 5th Dimension. “One Less Bell to Answer” is a total breakup tune, sold by the fantastic vocals of Marilyn McCoo (one of my favorite vocalists, if it matters!) She’s not doing too well. She’s trying to sell herself on the positives, one less egg to fry, one less man to pick up after, but she’s failing miserably. The 5th Dimension were on quite a tear between 1967 and 1973 - they had 20 Top 40 hits on the Billboard Hot 100. Released in 1970, “One Less Bell to Answer” was in the middle of that string of charters. But hear me out here. “Wedding Bell Blues” was released just a year prior. Do you think Bill finally caved and married her? And left her a year later? And she’s sad because she has one less bell to answer? Bill’s not coming back? Never mind that Laura Nyro wrote “Wedding Bell Blues” in 1966, and that Burt Bacharach and Hal David wrote “One Less Bell to Answer” in 1967. I think they got together and conspired on this. Or am I overthinking this? Link is to the song, naturally:

Probably not over thinking its possible because happens all the time in regular relationships. Good musicians sing what they know, Tim Armstrong, no he did not say that, they all say that.

Yeah, you’re overthinking it. Billy and Marilyn are still married. Good pick!
