There’s heartache, and then there’s this sucker-punch of heartbreak - today’s penultimate entry in Where Did Our Love Go? is one of the saddest breakup songs you’re ever going to hear: “Nothing Compares 2 U” by Sinead O’Connor. Written by Prince as a track for his funk project, The Family, and released on their only album, self-titled, “Nothing Compares 2 U” might singlehandedly be the most effective song ever at capturing the feelings of a breakup. Our lead character is going out all night, sleeping all day. She’s counting the minutes since he left. She’s aware. She’s free to do whatever the hell she wants now. And it doesn’t matter. She wants things back the way they were before. Despite it being Prince, The Family remains famous for basically recording this song first (Prince finally released it as a solo single in 2018, 28 years after Sinead made it famous.) Sinead O’Connor’s version took on a life of its own, however. Her version only managed to reach #1 in 23 different countries. It’s certified Platinum in eight countries (Double Platinum in Australia!) The video was the first by a female artist to win Video of the Year at the MTV Music Awards.
