We now return you to your regularly scheduled countdown.
Yeah, couldn’t forget Elvis on this day. Meanwhile, back on the countdown, here’s an R&B hit from way back when that you probably don’t remember…but you’ll be running back to this one after tomorrow’s song.
Here we go.
Ride Your Pony - Lee Dorsey
Lee Dorsey is best remembered for the hit “Workin’ in a Coal Mine.” This was a top 30 pop hit in 1965, but when “Workin’ in a Coal Mine” became such a huge hit, all the oldies stations forgot that the guy had other hits.
And he did have plenty of other hits, like “Ya Ya” (love that song) and the original version of “Get Out of My Life Woman,” which was later recorded by acts as diverse as Iron Butterfly, Solomon Burke, and the Paul Butterfield Blues Band! But if you remember Dorsey anymore, it’s for “Workin’ in a Coal Mine.”
The great Allen Toussaint wrote this song (AND “Workin’ in a Coal Mine”), and he’ll be along later in the countdown.

Yeah, all of the “other hits” get buried in favor of the “big one.”

I thought Devo did "Workin' in a Coal Mine." Just kidding. I don't remember this, we didn't even play it on our oldies weekends at the station. Don't know why.

Because they determined that he had one hit and that was all they were going to play!

@FourWalls - It would have totally fit the weekend format, though. I'm tracking the program director down.

I’ll give Toussaint (who also produced the record) credit for that.
