It's a Complete Catastrophe - "Rock You Like a Hurricane"

Another night, another song with a natural disaster in the lyrics. How uplifting, I know. What’s next, ten death songs? Don’t tempt me. I can do it. Tonight we venture into Hurricane Season, with the Scorpions’ 1984 hit, “Rock You Like a Hurricane.” You’ve likely heard “Rock You Like a Hurricane” at some point in your life, even if 80’s metal isn’t your bag. They play it in stadiums during sporting events, they use it in television commercials, movies, television (The Simpsons, It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, and The Big Bang Theory have all used it, among others.) Never mind that nobody in charge bothered listening to the lyrics before approving such usage - it’s a pretty misogynistic tune - it’s crunchy and tight and catchy and it rocks. People at the baseball game probably hear “Rock you like a hurricane” and only “Rock you like a hurricane,” so who am I to judge? At least they aren’t using “Another Piece of Meat” between the 5th and 6th innings. This is widely considered the Scorpions signature song, and I’m hard-pressed to think of what in their catalog would top it. “No One Like You,” maybe, but it lacked the male bravado needed to push “Hurrricane” to #5 on the Billboard Hot 100 (“No One Like You” only reached #65.) Once guitarist Ullrich Roth (now, Uli Jon) left the band in 1978 (he was unhappy with the musical direction the band was heading towards,) Scorpions began a string of successful 80’s metal/hard rock albums that led them to “Rock You Like a Hurricane.” He might not have cared for the new style, but the band became rock and roll superstars. Meanwhile, did you know that so far in 2026, there have been three named storms (Arthur, Bertha, and Cristobal.) A storm is not considered a hurricane until it reaches 64-95 knots, a major hurricane at 96 knots or higher. Those three were classified as tropical storms (34-63 knots.)
