She just doesn't get it

It's 10:58 p.m here in Nigeria, and I'm just getting dinner ready. I got home a little while ago, but I had to finish a few online tasks first. Now I can have dinner, relax in bed for a bit, and call it a night.
Something that happened today made me reflect on how differently people define friendship and care. A friend I'd not spoken to in a long time reached out weeks ago, just to check in.
The next day, I asked when she'd be free to talk, and she said, after work. I told her I was at the hospital with my stepdad and I'd call her when I could. But I never made that call.
Things got heavy with my stepdad's condition. What I actually hoped was that she'd send a simple message, just checking in how's he doing? How are you? And a week went by, and not a single word.
When I finally brought it up, she just didn't see the issue. So, I let it go. I'm not angry, I'm not keeping score. It just reminded me that people show what level of care they're willing to give. And sometimes the only thing to do is accept it, and match the energy I get. Good night, everyone.

That is quite wise. Sometimes the ones we wish would care the most just don't for some reason..and we are better off accepting it, and if they ever change we can be pleasantly surprised. Sorry she wasn't there for you, in the way you would have liked.

Sometimes it's not lack of care, but fear of saying the wrong thing and offending someone. Many eastern counteries choose silence, over risk of offending.

You probably need to stop expecting from others. That way you don't get disappointed.

It's always possible that your friend was actually busy and didn't think of it again or realize how serious your stepdad's condition is. Or, she might not care... You never know.
Sometimes, other people don't understand... It's always possible that since it's your stepdad and not your biological father, she doesn't see a reason to care very much. I've met all kinds in my life.
