New Orleans is a legendary city, and many legendary singers have mentioned it in their songs. You can’t get a whole heck of a lot more legendary than today’s artist, that’s for sure. So off we go to the Big Easy with today’s song! #8: Big River - Johnny Cash Something you may not remember of really call to mind, given that some of Johnny Cash’s most famous songs were written by others (Kris Kristofferson wrote “Sunday Morning Comin’ Down,” and there was Cash’s cover of the Nine Inch Nails song “Hurt”), but Cash was an amazing songwriter. Look how he did some word play in this song: “cavortin’ in Davenport” and “bat it down by Baton Rouge” are slick lines that just sneak by most people. In the early days of rock and roll nobody knew exactly what to do with Cash, so this song was a hit on country and pop charts. It also explains why Cash was the first person to be inducted as a performer in both the Country Music and Rock and Roll Halls of Fame. Even 23 years after his death his music remains loved and enjoyed by the hillbillies and and rockers.
