Hello Mylot friends, how are you all doing? I hope this won't be too long, but I wanted to share the information that I have got from my lab work that I got back from yesterday's tests. It definitely is not perfect, but things have improved from just the tests I had last (some 3 months ago, some a year). To start with, my anion gap was slightly high (but in range), and my Co2 was a little low (like 1 point under the range). -- Now I had these numbers both being off when I went into diabetic ketoacidosis a few years ago. But my blood sugars were in the 400s+ while I was eating low carb. It was caused by a medication I was on at the time.-- But while blood sugar is lower and stable, these two numbers being slightly off can mean that I am in dietary nutritional ketosis. If the Co2 drops a lot more, then I will have to get that checked into and fixed. But currently, it is not a problem. It is worth rechecking in 3 months when I go back, for sure. --- Now kidney health -- Based on my creatinine (0.57 mg/dl and my BUN (15 mg/dl) my kidneys are functioning well. The creatinine clears waste, and BUN manages protein intake...so I am efficiently breaking down the protein I am eating. Next -- Blood panel The only number really off on this group of tests was my RDW- CV (red cell distribution width - coefficeint of variation). That could be because of a b12 or folate deficiency, anemia, chronic inflammation or just because of being diabetic. Based on my other tests though, I am not anemic thankfully. The biggest reason is my ferritin being low. All of my iron tests have improved from a year ago. My overall iron and my iron storage and saturation were all extremely low in 2025. I did start a supplement, but stopped taking it after a while. So, it going up as much as it has, I am putting mostly on starting carnivore. I do also cook most things in cast iron. I am concerned with it being low, but my body needs more time to heal and catch up. I should have that rechecked in 3 to 6 months and see if it is much better. If not, at that point add the iron supplement back in. -- Finally, cholesterol -- Most of these numbers were good. The good cholesterol was a little low, and bad was a little high, but nothing extreme. My triglyceride to HDL ration was under 2.0 which is very good. If they do go up in the future, I can lower the saturated fats some and focus more on monounsaturated fats (though I wont' give up butter fully), focus on more seafood (omega 3s), and cut back on dairy. I am trying to cut back on some dairy because I know it can cause issues and weight gain. Overall, I think my labs were pretty good. I am also sure that by next time my A1c will at least be down to the 6.3 that my CGM shows now. If it catches up and shows an even better number that is great. Also hope by next time I will have another good number on the scale. This was just the beginning though, I know many are skeptical. I will share more tests when I have them done in the future to show how carnivore is working for me (or not, but I believe in it). What do you all think of everything? Photo via Pixabay.

It sounds like you are on the right track. I wish my childhood best friend took her diet seriously. She continues to eat just as bad as what got her to be diabetic.

Right, just wanted to share that this diet is doing good. If It was bad, I am sure it would have made a lot of the tests worse. Well I can understand that, I did that for many years myself. It is not easy to break from that.

Do you monitor your sugar at home? Do you test it every day?

Just now
I wear a CGM, so I can see it anytime I want.

It sounds like you have seen some encouraging improvements compared with your previous results, which must be reassuring. I especially like that you are planning to keep monitoring things rather than assuming one set of better numbers tells the whole story. The iron and ferritin would probably be the part I would keep a close eye on, and it is good that you already plan to recheck them. Hopefully your next round of tests shows even more progress. It will be interesting to see how things look over the next few months.

Whatever's helping we'll keep doing. If anything needs adjustments we'll do that, too. So those concerned needn't worry too much.

This is great progress, especially the iron numbers coming up so much from last year. Sounds like your doin all the right things and actually paying attention to your body, not just guessing. Keep us posted on the next round, rooting for that a1c to drop even more.

Yes, exactly. Most people think I went into this diet spur of the moment but I didn't. I researched it for a while. And I will do that. And I'm hoping to get it to normal ranges. I have done it once before
