Two big shocks today. First, I’m up a little early. I have to do a couple of returns. Secondly, this guy is NOT in the top ten. I know, what was I thinking. Don’t worry, lots of all-time favorites are in the top ten, so give me a break…and enjoy this song. Do Like You Do in New York - Boz Scaggs Boz Scaggs had a killer breakout with Silk Degrees in 1976, then the follow-up (Down Two Then Left) fell flat. It was a rather common occurrence in the mid-late 70s: you had massive albums, then the “highly anticipated” next album was anything from “not as good” to a total disaster. (I usually ask, as a trivia question, what was the name of the follow-up album to Frampton Comes Alive, to prove the point. I had a friend say, “He didn’t make one, did he?” [Answer: I’m in You. Debuted at #2 on the charts…fell like a rock from there.]) While I liked Down Two, it was no Silk Degrees. Which was to be expected: I mean, other than Meat Loaf, who did sequel albums? But Scaggs rebounded nicely, thank you, in terms of success (this album spawned two top 20 hits, “Breakdown Dead Ahead” and “Jojo”) and quality. And hey, we keep the hooker theme going (“Jojo” is a pimp)! The album is a terrific mix of rocker (“You Got Some Imagination,” which closes the album out, is fabulous), ballads, and that blue-eyed soul that is so synonymous with Boz’s music. So enjoy Scaggs’ smooth vocals and Steve Lukather from Toto on guitar (if you didn’t know, Toto got their start as a band when they ganged up as the session players for Silk Degrees) in this cool tune.
