HAS THE WORLD'S IDEA OF RIGHT AND WRONG CHANGED?

Sometimes I sit and wonder if the world is really changing, or if I am just getting older.
Things that used to make people say, “That is not right,” are becoming normal. And things like respect, loyalty, family values, keeping your word and having some self-control do not always seem to carry the same weight they used to.
Maybe it is called progress. Maybe every generation simply sees life differently.
But I sometimes wonder where we draw the line between accepting change and losing our values.
If our great-grandparents could see the world today, what do you think would shock them the most?

I feel that too. Sometimes it seems like people are becoming more focused on themselves, and there is less patience or concern for others.

@2ndchances24 Exactly. That is one of the things I notice too. A person's word used to carry a lot of weight. If someone said they would help, you could usually count on them. These days, people can say all the right things and still never show up.

That is so true, back in the day people depended on the words of others
as a bond, if some 1 said "I'll help you" they did. But now days you ask
for help & they never show up, or come through, it's a dog eat dog world.

I feel exactly like that! When I was young, I felt that the most important verb was "to be". Now it seems that it has been changed and the greates importance is what you HAVE.

@septabchips Money and power associated with it are so important now that many people don´t even notice that that implies that other human beings live in a sub human state.

@marguicha That is a good point. Money and power can become so important that people start looking at what someone has rather than how that person is being treated. I think that is where we have to be careful, because progress should not mean losing sight of people's basic dignity and humanity.

I really like how you put that, especially the difference between "to be" and "to have." It does seem like having more has become more important than being a good person for many people

That is true. We cannot stop the world from changing, and not every change is bad. I just think we need to be careful not to lose the basic values that still matter while adapting to the new ones.

@septabchips Indeed. We should know the foundation of knowing what is right or wrong in this world. It cannot be controlled at some point, but we can refuse if they are not meant for us to do.

@Shavkat Exactly. We may not be able to control how the world changes, but we can still decide what we personally believe is right and what we are willing to accept.

@Deepizzaguy A lot of people seem to feel that way about the direction society is taking. I suppose the interesting part is deciding which changes are genuine progress and which ones are simply changes in our values.

i feel older folks may offend more but at least they saw better times.after they finished school, they got job easily.there weren't first/second round of interviews, witnessing or feeling that jobs are fixed. they could easily buy a house or a flat.people today are broke, single people even more. the other day, one highschool girl was pushing me while i was exiting a tram.i said i can't go faster cause in front of me was an elder man but still, even if it was none, she shouldn't push me but she just said okay, no apology. but, some older people aren't polite too.when some older people needed my help, it was hey,hey, it wasn't excuse me and so on.yes, they thanked me in the end but if i said hey, i would have been chewed out and them, they are priviliged, i must say, due to their age. before, i feel, not all people were equal in some areas and today, that's more obvious;some have it way more while others have almost nothing. honesty, that doesn't exist.when someone starts saying that, i feel that person isn't telling the truth. and i started not liking holidays much cause, people think if they are good once a year, that they are forgiven.they are not. this is a complex topic, for sure

I agree, it is a much more complicated issue than simply saying people were better behaved in the past. Some things have definitely changed, but every generation has its own problems. I liked your point about respect, though. Even a simple “excuse me” or “sorry” seems to be disappearing in everyday situations. And I agree that being good once in a while does not make up for how someone behaves the rest of the year.

@valherma00 I understand what you mean. When you are struggling yourself, being constantly told to give or donate can feel frustrating. It is easy to forget that the person being asked to help may also be going through a lot.

@septabchips you are right. it sometiems depends but yeah, today, in general, people care less as they used too. hardships made some people liek it but some see it from others and copy that. yes, holidays are so fake and when they invite people to donate. i mean, i am struggling, i wish someone donates something to me.

Yes, that is probably the reality of it. Times change and people's views change with them. I suppose the real question is whether all those changes are actually making us better people.

Yes, it certainly is. No one even says "hello" for the most part anymore, and the children are not taught to respect adults at all.
