That’s my mountain bike, Agent Orange, at a lookout on the Highline Canal Trail that runs for 71 miles through the Denver Metro Area, this section being in the suburb of Centennial. The lookout provides a nice rest with views of the Sumac Hill Farm Conservation Easement, as well as the Front Range. Those are the Rocky Mountains you see back there. Sumac Hill Farm was founded in 1947 by Dr. Charles “Chuck” Smedley after he returned from WWII. His intention was that the land would be open space for generations. The easement portion of the farm was purchased for 1.1 million dollars in 2016. The Conservation Easement designation ensures that the land will remain undeveloped forever, keeping Smedley’s original dream intact. The farm itself operates as a horsemanship school. The family also keeps bees and sells the honey. Sunset dinners are also open to the public. Not too bad for land that was originally purchased for $200 an acre!
