Ravens vs. Crows

I don't we've had any ravens around here but we sure have crows. They can be very noisy. One time a mother crow was in one branch of a tree across from we lived and she was trying to get a young one to fly over to where she was. She put up a fit trying to fly over to her. I think they are interesting birds and here are a few things I found out about them: * Ravens are about the size of a red-tailed hawk. They have a thick, heavy bill and shaggy beard like neck feathers which are called hackles. Crows are smaller and slimmer. They are about the size of a large pigeon. They have a smooth neck and a smaller, straighter beak. * Ravens love to soar, glide and do aerial acrobatics. They have a diamond or wedge-shaped tail. Crows have a fan shaped tail that is flat edged. They do more of a continuous wing flapping rather than soaring. * Ravens have a deep, guttural croak or "groonk" sound. They are usually alone or in a pair. Crows make a high-pitched, sharp "caw" sound and often gather in large social flocks. The picture is from birdsbirdsbirds.com
