Before I head off to the women veterans’ open house at the VA hospital (I can always use an extra bag and a few pens) I’ll take you to New York City in song. Into the top five we sail with one of my all-time favorite albums. #5: Rockin’ Around in N.Y.C. - Marshall Crenshaw Way back when, I did a countdown of my favorite debut albums. With all the people I love and fawn over, it probably shocked the daylights out of everyone that Marshall Crenshaw’s 1982 debut topped the list. But MAN, this is an incredible album. And it always delights me when I hear “Someday, Someway” on piped-in music somewhere (heard it the other day at Chuy’s!). If you’re interested (or even if you aren’t ), Crenshaw is from Detroit, not New York. You’d swear he was a native New Yorker the way he encapsulates the buzz of the city. All while giving you a beat you can dance to! I’ve seen Crenshaw a number of times, and I’ve met him a few times as well. He’s a terrific person and a marvelous songwriter who really deserves to be recognized more than just as the guy who played Buddy Holly in La Bamba. Rockin’ Around in N.Y.C.
