Is There a “Scam” in Laundry?
I think there might be… or maybe I’m just overthinking it.
My daughter has her clothes laundered once a week. Normally, it goes something like this:
Monday: Drop off the laundry
Tuesday afternoon/evening: Laundry gets delivered back home to her.
Pretty straightforward, right?
But during those two-plus weeks of almost nonstop rain, the laundry shop announced that because of the weather, laundry would now take three to four days to finish.
Okay, I understand. Wet weather means drying clothes takes longer, and I am pretty sure the laundry shops were also dealing with a lot more customers. Especially people living in condos or dorms who don't have much space to dry clothes themselves.
But then came the interesting part…
They offered an “Express Fee” if you wanted your laundry processed overnight.
And that's when I started thinking…
Wait a minute.
Is this actually a reasonable rush/express service, because they have to give your laundry priority and find a way to get it dried faster?
Or is it a little questionable when the regular turnaround suddenly becomes 3–4 days, but you can pay extra to get essentially the usual turnaround time?
I am genuinely curious because I can see both sides.
The laundry shop has extra challenges during rainy weather, but customers also have their own problems, especially students living in dorms or people in condos who depend on laundry services.
What is more confusing to me now, it has not been raining but the process of laundry remains the same, with three to four days and an express fee.
My daughter is now scouting for a new laundry but while still at it, she is doing the self laundry in the same shop. But she needs to do it very early in the morning or very late at night, when there are fewer customers.

Yes, that's a scam. I hope she can find another place to do her laundry.

That is a total scam. All of a sudden the weather doesn’t matter if you pay extra? I don’t believe it because they’d still get backed up terribly with the other laundry, even with a three to four day turnaround.
I hope she can find a better place to have it done.
