The Yellow Box junction scam

Our local council want to put in ten new yellow box junctions in my town of Northampton. They say for road safety to improve traffic flow. We say its for hard cash. In 2024 they extended a box junction outside of their head office. It clocked up £500,000 in fines in under two years. That was around 17,000 motorists fined for stopping inside the box. The rule is you must only attempt to enter a box junction if you can clear it without stopping. But this is a round about type junction and has pedestrian crossings either side of it and so it backs cars up into the box junction, copping a fine. Drivers contest them but not getting much luck. Experts on traffic law have said its an illegal box junction but its still there. The council can look out their window at the junction and count the cash!
Now they want to put ten more in. I had heard that they may use London tactics where the traffic lights nearby are synced to make it more likely drivers get backed up in the box. We feel they are putting these boxes in where they will make the most money. In fact we know they are.

Although it might help with traffic, it is also a way of getting more money as you mentioned

Ten more boxes is wild, and £500,000 from one junction says a lot about what the real reason is. Hard to believe it's about safety when people keep getting fined for just getting stuck in traffic. Hope enough people complain so they back off, cause this feels like a cash grab to me.

That’s really bad. However I can imagine councils doing that.
