You Can Be Pretty Without Being Skinny

People sometimes say the most interesting things without realizing some of the biases in what they’re saying
I saw a cousin of mine about 10 or 15 years ago that I hadn’t seen in probably 10 or 15 years or more. The very first words out of his mouth to me were, “What happened to you? You used to be pretty.” Wasn’t that a terrible thing for him to say to me? Very hurtful very unnecessary.
One of my friends has a 50 year-old daughter and she showed me a picture of her the other day from when she was probably in her 20s. My friend said, ”that’s when she used to be skinny and pretty.” What? Doesn’t my friend still think her daughter is pretty?
Yesterday, a different friend showed me a picture of her youngest daughter who is in her late 40s. It was a bad photo so I couldn’t make out anything at all and I’ve only met her daughter once so I wouldn’t have recognized her anyway. But the mother said. “She’s so skinny now she finally looks good.” so her own mother didn’t think she looked OK at a heavier weight.?
I mean, I get a mother’s concern about her daughter, being healthy, and how being overweight contributes a lot of health problems but each of these two mothers seem to be overly concerned about their daughter’s appearances and putting a very high value on being skinny.

Just now
I consider myself pleasantly plump.

I tell and believe Pretty is lovely no matter what her weight happens to be at the time. Of course, she looks just like me so I might be prejudiced, too.
Sometimes she's very thin and sometimes she weighs a little more.
I have one Mexican friend (male) that I greet by saying "It's a good thing you're pretty because you're not very smart." He blushes deep red and grins from ear to ear. I assume he knows I'm teasing. I started telling him that when he was 15 or 16 years old... I can't remember what he was doing or saying but it didn't make him look/sound smart at all. He KNEW it.

@looeyville No wonder so many women grow up with low self esteem when even their mothers are critical of their appearance.
