I Share Her Frustration

Dear all, My wife is having a lot of stress over our landlord giving a vague inspection timeframe instead of a concrete date. We aren't even required to be at home when it's done, and she wouldn't want to be. What stresses her most I think is the thought that the landlord can just come in whenever. What if we are home and in the middle of something? It's a legit concern. I too wish the date were more concrete, but the reason it's not is probably to keep people on their toes. Understandable, but invasive and annoying.

They have to knock first, right? They can’t literally barge in? They have to give us 24 hour notice, and that’s usually exactly the notice we get. A vague week would annoy me greatly. No one likes to be on pins and needles in their own home.

They do have to knock, I think, yes. @AmbiePam but they also have a Master key, so technically they could just let themselves in (they meaning landlord and complex staff)

Yeah I get why your wife is stressed, not knowing when someone is coming in would bother me too. A vague timeframe is annoying, and a set date would be so much easier on everybody. Maybe ask the landlord for at least a rough time of day, it can't hurt to ask.

I think landlords have a right to be a little vague. Afterall, it's their property. It's their investment. That being said, and I am a former landlord, I have never heard of being able to simply enter the property unless that has been prearranged with a specific date and time. I never once entered a property I owned without being sure the tenant knew I was going to be there. Of course, laws do differ according to municipality and state.

I actually understand both sides. The landlord probably feels that giving an exact date might make you guys prepare and set up everything to be okay. He feels that when it's on a random date, he can see how things are naturally and probably gets the best results then, but it's not fair to you guys because you could have plans, and it might affect them.

The unavoidability of the situation that he might come in when you're all away is palpable and indeed frustrating.
