MyLotters Told Me That My "Friends" Were Not My Friends

MyLotters were right. I've reflected back on interactions with my "friends" and they aren't really friends. Despite the number of years of knowing each other, they're still really just acquaintances. And not very nice acquaintances at that. One of the card-playing girls, "L" just had neuropsych testing because her family was telling her she was forgetting things. I think she's 68. She was talking about the test and going on and on and on about how she is forgetting things. Well, for one thing, and this is going to sound mean, but she really always has been a bit of a ditz. But here's the thing that bothers me: I've been dealing with Mild Cognitive Impairment and signs of dementia since 2017 and not once has "L" or the other girls ever asked, "How are you doing?" or "I'm so sorry that's happening to you." But now because it's happening to "L" it's a big deal and she's acting like she's the expert on it. Then I reflected on the friend that I've been traveling with for 17 years. Do you know that she's never called me just to chat? She's never asked me how I'm feeling. She didn't send me a card when my mom died. She never asks what I'm interested in or doing. A couple of times when I've mentioned a malady she'll just roll her eyes. I'm a little slow in catching the hint, but she's not a warm fuzzy nice person. She's also critical. I've noticed that she'll criticize me over something trivial but I've never seen her criticize the other card girls or the Texas girls. Does that mean I'm going to dump that travel friend? No. But I'm going to be more aware of just exactly who she is. Oh, and guess what? It's a long story about WHY I sent a package to the annoying Texas girls, but I sent them something Halloween-related and went ahead and included an early Christmas present. I sent the box to the girl in Houston who took the other girl's presents to Austin two weekends ago. The Houston girl said thank you. I have never heard from the Austin girl. I have mailed birthday cards and Christmas cards to the Austin girl for 8 years and never once gotten a text acknowledging them or thanking me. So now I know what kind of girl she is. So, thank you my dear MyLotters for looking out for me and pointing this out to me so that I wouldn't remain naive. I need warm fuzzy friends. I'm a warm fuzzy person.

It is hard to realize that people aren't who you once thought they were. I was almost going to block a "friend" from email..as she never replied, and I really didn't like it. However, when I saw her in person on Saturday, she was quite warm and friendly..so..hmm. I just have to realize she is an acquaintance I guess, and not expect more.

One of life's lessons is never too expect much from people.

@JohnRoberts It's funny that you should say that because my therapist says to never have "expectations" of other people because they'll always disappoint you. She says to have "goals" instead.

The term "friend" is overrated and overused. What we think are friends are just casual acquaintances. Poker buddies, bowling buddies, book circle biddies etc. People put people in boxes for sections of their life. I learned that early on. You have cognitive issues? You have always been sharp at least in posts and out travel anyone I know.

@JohnRoberts Thank you. Yes, I feel sharp most of the time. Since 2016 and as recently as December 2025 I have tested as having Mild Cognitive Impairment. There's several theories about that. In 2016/2017 I was having trouble finding words (and I was only 51) and was getting lost in familiar places, couldn't remember my married name, etc., etc. So they put me on two Dementia medications. Things got better. Then in March of this year, I got a new psychiatrist and he thinks the issues I was going through in 2016/2017 were hormone-related as in Menopause. So he took me off the dementia meds. Now I'm struggling a little with word finding, memory, etc. again but I am 61 now so it could be age-related. But that doesn't explain the MCI diagnosis again 10 months ago. So I really don't know.

@LooeyVille The little things creeping upon you must be scary. All you can do is march forward in doing what you want to do right now and don't put off. Shoot, everyone should that at any age, any time because who knows. Sounds like you a grasp on the situation and dloing what you need to do.

I’m pleased that you have realised that you need warm fuzzy friends instead of those cold wet fish ( miserable ) ‘’ friends ‘ that you have had in your life. I wish I lived closer to several MyLotters, I would love to meet up with you guys and I know we would have great times and support each other lots.
