From sleepy town to overflowing with visitors - that's Nannup

I wrote about the Gravel Bike Championships being held in the small town of Nannup in Western Australia. Some years ago, Vince, I and nine friends spent the New Year holiday period in the town. We thought we’d spend New Year’s Eve at the hotel. We’d have a meal there, enjoy the entertainment and see the New Year in. Nope, the pub was shut over the two days. They were entitled to of course but it shows what a sleepy, backwater town it was in those days and it’s really not much more lively now. I can imagine having so many bike-riders, support crews and spectators would have stirred the place up a bit. The Blackwood River runs though the town and floods from time to time with the water flowing into some of the nearby houses. This tree in the riverbed has markers showing the height of the water at certain years.

Ha, a pub shut on New Year's Eve is wild, I bet that was a quiet one. Sounds like the bike championships probably woke the whole town up for once. That flood marker tree is so interesting too, never seen anything like that.

It just goes to show how small and quiet the town is/was. Quite possilbly it stays open nowadays.

It’s hard to believe they closed the pub on such a celebratory holiday. It’s charming though.

I'm sure they'll be trying to come up with more incentives to get people to visit. They won't run the event every year in Nannup, only very occasionally I'd say.

That must be quite a shock to the system! But sheesh, glad I wasn't there in 1946! I'm surprised there was anyone left to put up the flood marker!

One of the houses just perhaps 50 metres from the river has a mark half-way up the garden gate showing where the flood-waters reached.

I know emus were a pest there for a while. They weren't really dangerous but were eating all the gardens.

Quiet towns are the best. It really gets high at times there
