In Indonesia there is mistranslation about this plant. In English it is called amaranth but people In Indonesia say it is spinach but when google it we gonna find that spinach is another plant. In Indonesian it actually called bayam. It is impossible to rectify because this mistake is too common now. Finally for the original spinach now It is called "bayam jepang" which literally means Japanese spinach. By the way it is not from Japan. We often use the leave of amaranth for making soup.

I can understand the confusion as it does look a lot like spinach. Does it taste like it too?

Never knew bayam wasn't actually spinach, that's wild. Funny how a mistake gets so common it just becomes the real name. Amaranth leaf soup sounds really good though, i would try it
